Breakthrough In Lean Manufacturing "Lean On the Run"
by Anonymous

"Lean On the Run ©" Implement Lean Manufacturing With Little Time or Money.

"Becoming Lean" is no longer a question of "to be, or not to be," it has become a matter of survival. So how do you implement the best of Lean Manufacturing on a tight budget of time and resources?

According to Bill Hanover, CCO of TPS-ThroughPut Solutions, a manufacturing consulting group, "Lean On the Run" is the newest innovation in creating Lean companies quickly. "Lean On the Run" is a new approach that enables Lean implementation while running production.

Hanover says TPS is pioneering this process to make implementing Lean Manufacturing possible in plants where downtime is too costly or nearly impossible to accept during the transition to Lean. "This is especially true in small to mid-sized plants, or plants where layoffs have reduced staff to "bare bones" levels" says Hanover.

TPS conducts "Kaizen Events" or "Blitzes" to help companies implement Lean quickly and achieve outstanding results in about a week's time. Blitzes are probably the best tool to implement Lean quickly, but they consume the time and efforts of 8 - 12 people for 4 or 5 days and often require the area being Blitzed to be down much of the week.

With "Lean On the Run" TPS is able to help companies begin enjoying the benefits of Lean with only about 20% of the downtime experienced in a standard Blitz! How is this possible you might ask? Still refining the "Lean On the Run" process, Hanover says he follows a regimen of: Education, Discovery, "Team Huddles," Decision Making (real-time), and good old fashioned roll your sleeves up Work. He also notes "Creativity before capital" as a critical part of the process.

TPS sees the Lean On the Run process becoming a standard practice for achieving manufacturing excellence. "It just makes sense to me that consulting firms that are trying to help companies get Lean a.s.a.p. should also find a way to make the process of becoming Lean, a Lean process" says Hanover.
